“Pilates” or “Clinical Pilates”? What’s the Difference?

While both share the Pilates foundation, understanding their similarities and distinctions helps you choose the right approach for your needs.

Common Goals

Both approaches share a common main goal: exercise using the Pilates method and its guiding principles. Since every individual is unique, Pilates, like any form of exercise, is adapted by the instructor to meet the personal needs of each participant.

Both methods can be performed either in group classes (with or without equipment) or in private sessions, depending on the goals, health status, budget, and preference of the participant. The instructor is responsible for guiding the session with flow and effectiveness, adjusting the exercises as needed.

What Makes “Clinical Pilates” Different?

As a holistic exercise program, Clinical Pilates has been shown in research to have therapeutic benefits, particularly improving neuromusculoskeletal function. For this reason, it has attracted attention from special populations.

Because traditional Pilates can be demanding and some exercises may pose risks, the term Clinical Pilates was developed to indicate a safer and more targeted approach.

The main differences between traditional Pilates and Clinical Pilates are:

  • The target audience

  • Specific goals

  • Exercise selection

  • Exercise sequencing

  • Session intensity

Special populations include individuals who may be vulnerable due to:

  • Pregnancy or recent surgery

  • Musculoskeletal injuries

  • Musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., scoliosis)

  • Chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, multiple sclerosis)

How It Is Performed

Clinical Pilates is ideally performed individually or in very small groups (2 people), especially when there is significant variability among participants (different health issues or conditions).

Traditional Pilates can also be done individually, particularly when participants seek faster results or prefer privacy.

The instructor’s guidance is crucial, as goals are continuously adjusted, participants progress, and feedback is an essential part of the process.
